Green Tip of the Week:
Turning off your computer and monitor at night not only reduces energy use, it saves money! Computers do not need to be on for updates during the evenings. If there is an update, PatchLink will run in the morning when you turn on your computer.

When should we collaborate?
We have been hearing a lot about collaboration recently. Be it collaborative learning or collaborative partnerships, everyone seems to be trying to be better collaborators. But are we really sure what we mean by collaboration? Is it always the best approach?
A recent blog posting by Anecdote, an Australian company that use narrative techniques to make business leaders better collaborators, attempts to help us better understand the what, when, why and how of collaboration. The post outlines the differences amongst collaborating, coordinating and cooperating and provides a framework (simple, complicated, complex and chaotic) to help organize and think about these different approaches. It can be helpful to understand how your unit, group or program actually gets things done in a varied and dynamic environment such as medical education at UCSF.
So check out the post and maybe the next time someone says “we should collaborate on that” you’ll know whether that is really the best idea.
Learn more about these helpful concepts of collaboration at http://www.anecdote.com.au/archives/2008/12/when_should_we.html

Online Back-Safety Training
Back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the US. It affects 80 percent of all Americans at some time in their lives. While pain or discomfort may be felt anywhere in your back, the most common area affected is the low back, which supports most of your body’s weight.
Back pain is often times not the result of a single event. It is generally the result of multiple stressors on the body from improperly standing, sitting, or lifting for a long time. Then, suddenly, one simple movement such as bending to pick up the paper in the morning can cause pain. Keeping your back healthy is important to enjoy every aspect of your life.
We all do some lifting whether it is part of our jobs or not. Protecting your back, when you do so is important to preserve your back health. An online Back Safety Training is posted on Research Online. We strongly recommend all UCSF Faculty and Staff to complete the Back-Safety Training.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your ergonomics needs, do not hesitate to contact the campus ergonomist at ergonomics@ucsf.edu.
