Thank You to Diego Sotelo

Please join us in thanking Diego Sotelo for his extraordinary contributions to Medical Education and the Foundations of Patient Care.  Diego will be leaving FPC to study for the MCAT and prepare for medical school full-time on January 3, 2011.

Diego has been with FPC serving as the Course Assistant for over three years.  During that time Diego's contributions to Medical Education and FPC have been outstanding.  Diego digitized and produced the problem based learning cases in an online format. He presented his work at the Western Group on Educational Affairs Regional Meeting in a poster session entitled, Creating a Multimedia On-Line Digital Problem-Based Learning Case. His innovative spirit and skill have sparked great interest in moving FPC toward more technology based curricular practices.

Diego is an amazing team member and is always willing to hep.  He has been a valued member of the Medical Education Green Team since it's inception. We will deeply miss his generosity and kind heart.

Please join us in wishing Diego good luck with his future endeavors!

Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation Faculty Scholars Program Overview and Application Information

Dear School of Medicine Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce an exciting new faculty fellowship program for mid-career medical education leaders: the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation Faculty Scholars Program. The purpose of this national fellowship program is to identify and nurture the careers of educational innovators in medicine and nursing in order to develop the next generation of national leaders in medical and nursing education.

Five leaders will be selected nationally to receive 50% salary support for two years to develop their leadership and scholarship skills in medical or nursing education. The announcement is available on the UCSF Sponsored Research website and the Macy Foundation website.  You can also find the program overview and application information on the Medical Education portal.

UCSF School of Medicine applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, which is why the internal deadline precedes the foundation deadline.

If you have questions, contact Gail Fischer in OSR (who can also provide the actual application form), Macy or me.

Pathways GME Catalog

GME learners considering Pathway to Discovery will find it easier to explore and enroll because of the new GME Pathways Catalogue.

The catalogue provides easy access to information about goals, mentorship and professional development, coursework and experiential learning, schedules, requirements, applications, and community for each of the five Pathways. Lists of current GME Pathways learners encourage prospective residents and fellows to talk with peers, and reveal the growing number of participants from a greater range of residency programs and departments. Of note, the Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved program (PLUS) can now serve as the longitudinal portion of an individually-designed curriculum in the Health and Society Pathway. The catalogue, the first annual edition, will be distributed to all residents, fellows, and residency program directors.

Meet our Medical Education Development Team

Please join us in welcoming Anders Yang to UCSF. He is the new Chief Advancement Officer for Medical Education and Senior Director of Development (Alumni) for the School of Medicine.

Anders joined us in early October and is based at 220 Montgomery with his colleagues in University Development & Alumni Relations. Anders comes to UCSF with over fifteen years of experience in higher education, having worked at Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley. He is an honors graduate of both institutions, receiving his law degree from Harvard and his undergraduate in economics from Berkeley. Anders also studied abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Most recently, he served as Dean for Development & Alumni Relations at the UC Berkeley School of Law.

Please welcome Anders to Medical Education. He can be reached at ayang@ support.ucsf.edu.

Gary Bernard is no stranger to the Medical Education Development team. He first came on board as the School of Medicine Alumni Reunion Campaign Director organizing the 2005, 2006 and 2007 reunions. Working with the leadership of PRIME-US, Gary has helped raise over $2M for programmatic and scholarship support. Gary currently serves as Director of Alumni Development for the School of Medicine.

Michael Eccles joined UCSF in 2007 as the Reunion Campaign manager and supported UCSF’s returning alumni through three very successful reunions. Most recently Michael was promoted to the position of Director of Alumni Relations –UCSF School of Medicine. In this new role, Michael will provide opportunities for our medicine alumni to reconnect with their classmates, as well as with UCSF and it’s faculty and deans. “It is my goal to show our alumni, no matter where they live, all the wonderful and amazing things that happen here at UCSF every day.”

Michael comes to UCSF from 20 plus years of working within the medical equipment manufacturing sector.

Michael would like to remind you to save the date for the UCSF School of Medicine Alumni Weekend event, May 6th and 7th, 2010. He hopes to see you there.

Wiki@UCSF -- MyAccess Login Transition - Mark Your Calendars

On December 20, 2010, the Library and Information Technology Services (ITS) will switch the authentication for Wiki@UCSF from GALEN Accounts to MyAccess.

What does this mean? After the transition, users will sign on to the wiki with their MyAccess credentials. The wiki service itself will continue to function exactly as before, and all user history will be preserved. This change should be especially straightforward for students, since for almost all students, the GALEN and MyAccess usernames are identical.

When will this happen? The transition to MyAccess will take place on December 20, 2010. Our main goal is to make this transition as transparent to campus users as possible. A great deal of planning and coordination by both the Library and ITS will be required to make this transition proceed smoothly. In addition, the new Tech Commons in the new Teaching and Learning Center on the Library's 2nd floor will be open in early January. With the new Tech Commons service desk, staff there will be able to assist users with questions and help them with the transition.

Why transition to MyAccess? There are a number of important reasons why GALEN Account authentication must be retired and replaced by MyAccess:
  • Better Efficiency: Maintaining multiple authentication systems is inefficient and creates more user confusion. The staff time spent managing GALEN Account authentication can now be put to better use. More campus services are already using MyAccess or moving to it.
  • Better Security: MyAccess authentication is more modern and secure than GALEN Accounts. For example, MyAccess password requirements meet current security standards; GALEN Account passwords do not meet these standards.
  • Reduced/Single Sign-On: The campus VPN and wireless network now use MyAccess authentication. Transitioning services that had used GALEN Accounts to MyAccess moves us closer to an environment where a single account allows campus users to access most campus services.
  • Improved Guest Account System: It is important to be able to provide wiki access to legitimate campus visitors. With GALEN Accounts, the procedures to provide visiting access were onerous for all parties -- the schools, the visitors, and Library staff. With the move to MyAccess authentication, schools and departments will be able to more easily sponsor campus guests and visitors through an easy-to-use web-based system developed by the Library and ITS. User guides and documentation are under development that will explain how guest access will work in more detail.
What if I have questions? If you have any questions about this transition, please send an email to wiki-admin@ucsf.edu.
