Thank You to Joe Crawford
It is with very mixed emotions that we announce that Joe Crawford is leaving Medical Education and Educational Evaluations team at the end of March. Joe has been with Educational Evaluations since July 2006 and has been our source for the Essential Core evaluations, the Teaching Awards and many other important evaluations projects.
On Monday 3/28, Joe will be starting his new position as the administration and communications analyst in the School of Pharmacy Dean’s Office.
We will miss Joe very much in the School of Medicine, but fortunately he will still be at Parnassus. Since the School of Pharmacy uses EValue, we will be lucky enough to continue working with him on a campus wide level.
We will certainly miss Joe and please join us in congratulating him on his new position!

Western Colleges Commission Gives UCSF High Marks for Collaboration and Diversity
The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) has reaffirmed UCSF’s accreditation across all four schools and the Graduate Division, citing the commission’s confidence in UCSF’s capacity to continue achieving its goals for student success into the future.
UCSF earned the maximum period of time – 10 years – until its next review by WASC’s Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities. Accreditation by the nonprofit association reflects UCSF’s rigorous standards of quality, capacity and effectiveness in its mission, including a special focus on enhancing diversity initiatives, improving education facilities and fostering collaborative education.
“This validates UCSF's efforts to make each of its schools a top leader in training the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH. “I was particularly pleased that the commission noted the galvanizing effect of our new Teaching and Learning Center on helping UCSF become the best place for clinical teams to learn together.”
The technology-rich Teaching and Learning Center – which opened in February as host to a state-of-the-art clinical skills simulation lab – was cited by the WASC commission as proof of UCSF’s commitment to increasing the quality of its interdisciplinary learning environments.

Associate Dean Helen Loeser to Step Down July 2011
Dr. Helen Loeser has informed me that she intends to step down as associate dean for curriculum, effective July 1, 2011. She plans to continue to work on specific educational initiatives. While I have accepted her decision to step down with regret, I am delighted that she will remain an active member of our medical education team.
It has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Loeser. I admire her passion for education, her ability to innovate, her devotion to our students, her dedication to fairness and inclusion, her commitment to supporting the development of others, and her remarkable compassion. Under Dr. Loeser's stewardship, the curriculum in the medical school has flourished and garnered national and international recognition. She ably led the planning committee for the new Teaching and Learning Center and has contributed significantly to interprofessional education on campus. In 2007, Helen was honored with the Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine. On behalf of our entire community, I want to thank Dr. Loeser for her extraordinary contributions.
An internal search, led by Associate Dean Maxine Papadakis, will be conducted to find a successor who will continue to advance the school's MD curriculum. The search announcement can be found on the School of Medicine website. Please send applications and nominations to Dr. Papadakis c/o Frances Harvey.
Please join me in thanking Dr. Loeser for her outstanding service to education.
Sincerely,
Sam Hawgood
