We are announcing the development of a new unit in Medical Education, the Clinical Learning Unit (CLU).
The CLU is a subunit of Undergraduate Medical Education that reorganizes the Foundations of Patient Care (FPC) team and the Community Based Education team as one unit that is closely tied to curricular planning and activities of UME. The CLU staff support and coordinate the FPC course, as well as, volunteer and teaching faculty outreach, recruitment, retention, and development.
The Clinical Learning Unit is led by two faculty members, Anna Chang, the director of the Foundations of Patient Care and Meg McNamara, the director of faculty outreach. The unit is administratively managed and directed by Christina Cicoletti. Lara Pheatt and Charlie DeVries coordinate the course activities of FPC including the Observed Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), Mini-OSCE, and Transitional Clerkship (TC), to name a few of the high stakes clinical immersion activities in the FPC course. Christina Lum coordinates the volunteer and teaching faculty preceptorships, including FPC preceptorships and the Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE). As the newest member of the team, Patricia Ramirez supports the Association of the Clinical Faculty and coordinates outreach, retention and development of volunteer faculty.

AAMC Releases Preliminary Recommendations for New MCAT® Exam
The AAMC released the preliminary recommendations for a new version of the Medical School Admissions Test (MCAT®) on March 31. There are 14 preliminary recommendations that aim to balance the exam’s focus on the natural sciences with the testing of critical analysis and reasoning skills, and direct attention to the behavioral and social sciences. The recommendations were developed after an extensive three-year review process that involved stakeholder groups, input from blue-ribbon committees and advisory groups, and feedback from more than 2,700 informational and opinion surveys of undergraduate and medical school faculty, administrators, residents, and medical students.

Employee Survey Available Until April 15
The UCSF 2011 Staff Engagement Survey period will end Friday, April 15. The survey, conducted every other year, will poll more than 14,000 employees on campus and in the medical center to help identify ways that UCSF can improve as a workplace to actively “engage” its employees and ensure that employees have pride in what they do.
The survey results will help shape areas of focus for the next fiscal year, including to create a supportive work environment and to cultivate strong, capable managers. This is an opportunity for medical education employees to provide feedback to medical education, the School of Medicine and the university.
This year, UCSF selected the Gallup organization, known nationally for its polls, to conduct the survey, which will be shorter and more targeted than in the past. The 18-question survey should take five to 10 minutes to complete.
Gallup will hold your opinions in complete confidence. No personal references or other information related to your identity will be revealed.
Medical Education has the most dedicated and inspiring staff of any medical school I have ever worked with or visited and your opinion about our work environment is very important to me and the medical education leadership. Please take the few minutes required to complete the survey.
Sincerely,
Kevin H. Souza
Assistant Dean for Medical Education
