Sittercity is Now Available

The University of California is pleased to announce that Sittercity, a new work-life benefit that gives members access to more than two million nationwide caregivers is now available to current benefit eligible employees (staff and faculty) at UC.

In the May 2010 report of the Systemwide Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (SACSW) to President Yudof, a recommendation was made to provide back-up childcare, eldercare, and related services for UC staff and faculty. Sittercity, the vendor chosen by the University to provide this program, is a web-based resource available to eligible employees at all UC locations. The caregivers listed on Sittercity’s website meet diverse care needs, helping members balance their work-life demands.

The cost of membership to use the site is paid by the University. Members pay only for the services of the caregivers they select. Click here to activate your free membership.

Sittercity helps find:

Babysitters for after-school., school vacations, extended work hours, special needs children, and last-minute care needs.
Nannies for full-and part-time, infant and young child care
Senior-care providers
Dog walkers and pet sitters
Tutors and housekeepers

Sittercity provides UC staff and faculty with access to local, pre-screened caregivers and the tools (including reviews, references and background checks) to review and select the caregivers of their choice. While Sittercity employs many pre-screening and on-going monitoring processes, and will provide support to UC members, if there are concerns, participants are responsible for their use of Sittercity, including selecting, hiring, paying and managing the caregivers of their choice.

Employees eligible for this program include faculty and non-represented staff who are currently eligible for benefits. Eligibility of represented employees for Sittercity participation is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement and a list of participating bargaining units is posted on the Sittercity website.

We encourage you to take advantage of this new resource, as it is an excellent addition to UC’s work-life benefit programs.

Sascha has been instrumental in the design and delivery of the Ilios 2 curriculum management application at UCSF and has joined the medical education team to ensure long term vitality of the project. A technology manager for nearly two decades, Sascha is equipped with an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas, and his writing has been published by the University Press of America, Edwin Mellen Press, University of Texas Press, and a variety of small journals nationwide. He is also the proprietor and baker for 3141 Pie, of which you should eat many. Sascha's office is on the first floor of the UCSF Library.

Let Me Down Easy to Air on PBS

UCSF Celebrates National Mentoring Month 2012 in Honor of Late Kevin Mack

Members of the UCSF community are invited to celebrate National Mentoring Month in January 2012 in honor of Kevin Mack, MD, MS. Mack, a faculty member with joint appointments at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health and the UCSF Department of Psychiatry, served as one of the advisory college mentors in the UCSF School of Medicine and as the director of Educational Technology in the UCSF-Berkeley Joint Medical Program.

National Mentoring Month highlights mentoring of all kinds and the positive impact it can have on the next generation. As a highly acclaimed mentor to both students and colleagues, the UCSF Faculty Mentoring Program deemed that this year’s National Mentoring Month activities be held in honor of Mack.

Helen Loeser, MD, MSc, a professor of clinical medicine, and Amin Azzam, MD, MA, will present an inaugural lecture, titled “Mentoring of Value: Inspiration from Kevin Mack, MD, MS,” on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Nursing Building, room N 225, on the UCSF Parnassus campus.

Amin Azzam, MD, MA, an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry who was a close colleague of Mack’s, will open the discussion with his reflections on the lasting influence of his friend as a great mentor.

The Education Technologies Analyst will have primary responsibility for projects that enable the use of learning technologies to design, deliver or enhance CME content delivered through various formats. The role will lead the UCSF CME eLearning program and to implement and maintain the necessary information and learning technology resources, including a learning management system (LMS), the unit’s content and document management systems, web-based courses, computer-based testing and educational multimedia used by the School of Medicine’s continuing medical education programs for marketing and delivering curricular content. The incumbent also serves to lead the use of content management systems, making recommendations for products including software and hardware to facilitate technology-enabled learning; consults with course chairs, and accreditation and conference management team leaders in best practices for delivering and managing eLearning content and analyzing activity outcomes. The incumbent will promote models of course organization that make effective use of eLearning. This includes working with instructional designers or subject matter experts to plan and scope requirements for curriculum, to contribute to storyboarding and to develop real-time and asynchronous content, consider options for blended learning solutions, and develop and implement appropriate assessment strategies. In addition, the Educational Technologies Analyst will oversee and consult on the administration of the CME and eLearning website(s), promote and coordinate the use of classroom technologies and assist with other information and learning technologies as needed.

Staff Engagement Plan Moves Forward

The UCSF Medical Education leadership approved the proposed staff engagement plan developed by staff for staff in reaction to the 2011 Gallup Staff Engagement Survey at UCSF.

Medical education scored higher than the UCSF mean on 10/12 engagement questions but medical education saw this as an opportunity to develop a comprehensive engagement plan that addresses both our strengths and challenges as a large team.

In January medical education staff will be charged with developing the details of this plan for implementation this spring.

Regents Approve Increased Pension Contributions

On Nov. 28, the UC Board of Regents approved an increase in retirement plan contribution rates for both UC and its employees effective July 2013. Currently, employees pay 3.5 percent and UC pays 7 percent. Those rates will increase to 5 and 10 percent respectively on July 1, 2012. Beginning July 1, 2013 faculty and staff will contribute 6.5 percent of their pay and UC will contribute 12 percent to the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP). Rates for represented employees are subject to collective bargaining.

This decision is the latest in a series of actions intended to shore up the funded status of the plan and ensure its long-term viability. The 2013 combined employee and UC contribution rate will, for the first time in more than 20 years, cover the annual cost of the plan. Every year, the plan absorbs liabilities that are equivalent to roughly 18 percent of UC’s covered payroll. While the 2013 contributions will cover the annual “normal cost,” the combined rates are still below the level of the regents funding policy, which is the full annual cost, plus a portion of the unfunded liability. Association launches Curriculum Reports Web site

I would like to call your attention to our new Curriculum Reports, an interactive resource on the AAMC Web site that features information on medical school curricula for all U.S. medical schools. Debuted at the annual meeting, these reports replace our previous Curriculum Directory and provide graphs of aggregate and historical curriculum-related data collected annually by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The site includes data on topics like clerkship length and specialties, student assessment methods, and professional behavior instruction, as well as a section on educational technology. Information from Curriculum Reports will be used to generate an upcoming series of Analysis in Brief studies with invited commentary from curriculum deans and staff. Standing—permanently in existence in order to deal with a particular, ongoing function or issue and has no specified end‐date. Types of standing committees include but are not limited to:

Steering— having the function of deciding agendas and topics for discussion and prioritizing action or urgent business.

iCollaborative Launches at AAMC

AAMC announces the launch of iCollaborative, a new online service that allows quick and easy sharing of innovative ideas, best practices, policies/guidelines, educational and assessment tools in development, and other valuable resources spanning the continuum of medical education, healthcare delivery, and research.

The iCollaborative complements MedEdPORTAL as a venue for educators, providers, and researchers to post content in an open-access environment and without formal review. Users may utilize commenting features to drive discussions centered on resource development, refinement, and community-vetting. Once a resource maturates and becomes eligible for peer-review, authors are encouraged to submit to MedEdPORTAL.

Shooting a video interview is something that anyone can do, but it takes practice to produce a quality product. In this workshop, we will discuss and practice techniques for planning and shooting an effective video interview. At the end of the workshop, participants will know how to set a scene, light their subject, capture clean audio, and add a few finishing touches during the editing process. Basic digital video experience is recommended (see our Introduction to Digital Video workshop), but not required. Open to UCSF faculty, staff, and students.

Don Schwartz is sitting on an examination table in a hospital gown, eyes closed, getting into character.

An actor, he must channel a 55-year-old with chest pain for medical students at UCSF.In medical schools across the country, students are perfecting their bedside manner and taking high-stakes tests needed to graduate by practicing on "standardized patients" like Schwartz - actors who fill in for the real thing.

The national Standardized Patient Program provides actors with scripts, and students are evaluated based on how well they diagnose the patient's medical problems. Actors are asked to rate the students afterward.In Schwartz's case, UCSF students must examine him and ask the right questions to ascertain he's suffering from heartburn and anxiety.

UCSF professors monitor the interaction down the hall in a room with 18 flat-panel monitors.Schwartz appeared anxious, fidgety and impatient with the questions about his smoking, drinking and high-pressure job. Several times he let out long exhalations like a person trying to calm a racing heart."Students can practice in a safe environment, they can ask the right or wrong questions, they can come up with a diagnosis that isn't right," said Bernie Miller, a former standardized patient who was tapped to lead the Standardized Patient Program at UCSF in 2000.

Actors are finding steady work playing everything from dying cancer patients to obese teenagers with diabetes. Specialized actors even undergo gynecological and rectal exams."It's like a casting call, but from the hospital," said Kathy Mello, 69, of Albany, who has played a suicidal patient, a heart attack survivor afraid having sex with her husband will jeopardize her health, and a dying woman.

AAMC President Lauds the "New Excellence" in Academic Medicine

Denver, Colo., November 6, 2011—As the U.S. health system undergoes substantial change, the nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals are breaking free of the tyranny of national rankings systems and demonstrating a “new excellence” through multiple pathways, AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., said in his annual address at the association’s 122nd annual meeting. Speaking to nearly 4,000 academic medicine leaders who attended the meeting in Denver, Kirch said “the new excellence is not about size, growth, or public relations. It is about locally defined commitments to fulfilling an institution’s specific mission and demonstrating real outcomes from those commitments.” Examples of the “new excellence” include redesigning and broadening the medical school admissions process to assess applicants’ pre-professional attributes through new approaches, such as the “Multiple Mini-Interview” and other new tools. Kirch praised the use of emerging technology to enhance learning and assess competence, as well as greater interprofessional education. “We cannot aspire to team-based care in the clinical setting while educating different health professions in isolated silos,” Kirch said. Number of First-Time Medical School Applicants Reaches New High

First-time applicants to medical school reached an all-time high in 2011, increasing by 2.6 percent over last year to 32,654 students, according to new data released today by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). UCSF Aims for High-Quality Health Care through Interprofessional Education

Interprofessional education, now in its sixth year at UCSF, is more ambitious and far-reaching at the university than ever before.

About 475 future doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and physical therapists met recently in UCSF’s Millberry Union gym to kick off Interprofessional Health Education Day, a mandatory event for all first-year students in UCSF’s health professions. “The goal is to try to find ways to learn the curriculum together,” said Renee Courey, PhD, a mentor who is coordinator of UCSF’s Pathways to Discovery, an interprofessional training program.

“Each profession tells different stories about patient care. For example, nurses often tell stories that emphasize loss and suffering. Physicians tell stories of restitution and recovery. Pharmacists tell stories of the miracles wrought by a single drug. But all of these stories have patients and their families at their heart, and we must share our mutual perspectives and our stories if we are to become a highly functioning team.” - Kathleen Dracup, Keynote Speaker

Launching October 20, the "UCSF: Committed to the City” web project highlights UCSF’s work across San Francisco. The project features an interactive map, videos, slideshows and audio clips to provide a first-hand look at the many lives that UCSF touches every day. The website debuts with 20 stories ranging from free public health screenings to how UCSF uses its expertise to improve science education and develop a skilled workforce.

Every 15 years, the Regents require each campus in the University of California system to evaluate its academic and physical plan for future development. This plan, a Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), guides physical development over the plan’s timeframe.

Green Tip: the power of Baking soda, Borax and Vinegar for green cleaning

These 3 simple ingredients create an arsenal of environmentally friendly cleaning

Baking soda: helps to clean and deodorize, will act as a scouring agent, polisher, stain remover, fabric softener. Use to clean plastic, vinyl, carpet, silver, stainless steel, drains, and refreshes your fridge.
Borax: helps to clean and deodorize. Use on wallpaper, painted walls, and floors. Use it with your detergents to remove stains and boost the cleaning power.
Vinegar: helps remove stains, wax buildup and mildew. Use to clean windows, fireplaces, grout, paint brushes, glass, and coffee pots.

Some simple recipes for green cleaning:

Tub and sink cleaner: sprinkle baking soda on porcelain fixtures and rub with a wet rag. Rinse well to avoid a hazy film.
Window and mirror cleaner: put 1/4 cup of vinegar in a 16-ounce spray bottle and fill to the top with water. A few drops of detergent may be added to prevent streaks. Spray on surfaces. Rub with a diaper, or other lint-free rag, or sheet of newspaper.
Dusting: use a soft cloth slightly dampened with water.
Spot cleaner: 1/4 cup of borax and 2 cups of water. Dissolve in water, sponge on stain and let it dry or pre-treat before washing.
Drain cleaner: pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain first, then 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for a few minutes. Then pour down a tea kettle full of boiling water. Repeat if needed.
Oven cleaner: do not use this cleaner on self-cleaning ovens. Mix 1 cup of baking soda with enough water to make paste. Apply to oven surfaces and let stand a little while. Use the scouring pad for scrubbing most surfaces. A spatula or bread knife is effective to get under large food deposits.

Analysis in Brief Explores Medical School Admissions Process

Two companion Analysis in Brief (AIB) reports released Sept. 30 by the AAMC explore how admissions committees use academic and non-academic data and interviews to select medical school students. The first analysis, which studies the use of data and supporting admissions materials, found that while MCAT exam scores and GPAs were important to the interview selection process, letters of recommendation and interviews were the most important factors in deciding which students to admit. The second AIB describes for the first time in nearly 20 years the current interview process and looks at how it has changed over time. According to the findings, the most significant difference is in the structure of the interview “with more schools providing guidance about interview content and scoring to interviewers."
